Underwater in Palau - April 2001

Crinoids
I don't know what these things are technically, but they have a very high weird factor! They can swim freely in open water using their arms to propel themselves similar to the way an octopus swims, but they look like a plant at rest. Their arms move around as if they are searching for food, and when they find something the arms will curl up around it.

Starfish
These guys take on many forms, from the large and lace-like basket star to the crown-of-thorns star that is poisonous and can take over reefs.

Sea Urchins
There is a wide variety of sea urchins. The ones pictured here were all quite small, with a body the size of a dime or smaller. These pictures were taken with a 2:1 extension tube on a 35mm lense.
